Aramco has participated in the Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC) since the inaugural conference in 2013. The company is now considered a major exhibitor and a mainstay on the technical program, providing an international dimension to the conference.
Aramco’s visibility illustrates the company’s commitment to unconventionals, specifically its Unconventional Gas Initiative which is a major component in broadening the company’s portfolio. While North American independent E&P firms are credited with pioneering new drilling techniques to extract oil and gas from US shale rock formations, Aramco has made contributions toward advancing new technologies and techniques. Our participation shows great strides have been made in the development of our unconventional resources program to serve domestic needs for natural gas.
This year, geomechanics or the study of rock behaviors with injection or production including hydraulic fracturing, has become the largest program among the conference themes with seven sessions and 45 technical presentations. Nearly half of the geomechanics sessions will be chaired or co-chaired by Aramco professionals. The July issue of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Explorer Magazine features “Geomechanics Dominates in Unconventional Resource Development” calling attention to the fact that this year one of the largest programs at URTeC is geomechanics as the discipline has grown in importance in the exploration of unconventional resources.
Aramco is a diamond level sponsor of this year’s URTeC and representatives have served on the Technical Committee for the conference.
